Mask - The Musical

There was the movie Mask with Cher, Sam Elliott and Eric Stoltz. Well, now there is the stage adaptation of the motion picture - a musical version. Hunh?

OK, I admit it, I was skeptical - How could they possibly do a musical of Mask? Well, they did and it is good. I thought it was a wonderful production and the performances were terrific - maybe even Broadway bound! Be prepared - you may need tissues!

I loved the movie - now I love the musical! Currently at the Pasadena Playhouse:

Walking in Memphis

A question I get asked a lot - Have you met Cher? And yes, I met Cher on the set for the music video ‘Walking in Memphis.

The video was filmed locally in an industrial area of Sunland, CA over two days, and having never been in a music video before, let alone as Cher’s double, it was a bit overwhelming. Thank goodness a friend came along for the shoot, he calmed my nerves and we got in a lot of card playing.

I can’t begin to tell you the range of feelings I was experiencing when I first saw Cher on the set. I mean, here I am seeing in person for the first time, someone who I had “lived with” in music, photos, books, and video footage for a long time. It was surreal in a way - like an out-of-body experience. (I’m not really sure what an out-of-body experience is, but I’m certain I was having one.)

There was one little scary moment when toward the end of Day 2, when I was quite certain Cher was on the set (we had all been instructed not to approach the celebrities), I knocked on her trailer door to inquire with her assistant if Cher would be willing to take a photo with me after the video wrapped. Well, as the door opened, I looked in and saw Cher sitting on a sofa. Whoa, was I surprised! But Cher was very nice and said, “sure”. So not only is Cher a fabulous entertainer and beautiful, but so sweet.

Watch the music video at the following link and see if you can find the impersonators:

Cher at Caesar’s

Cher is opening at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas in May 2008. Bette Midler is at Caesar’s now in “The Showgirl Must Go On” show. As I understand it, Cher and Bette will be trading off shows in the Coliseum over the next couple of years.

Reading about Bette Midler’s show at Caesar’s made me think of the time when I was in Bette Midler’s New Year’s Eve show at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas as part of the Divine Miss Millennium Tour. There were 4 impersonators in her show that night: Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart and moi as Cher. We crowned Bette the Queen of the Millennium (I actually put the crown on Bette’s head) amid fireworks raining down on our heads, which I was afraid was going to catch my wig on fire, but thankfully did not.

Bette Midler did about a 2.5-hour show that night and was fabulous. After the show, we all met Bette backstage and took photos with her. I have to say, even after a long day of preparation and performing for 2.5 hours, Bette was gracious and kind to all of us. She thanked us all for our part in the show and headed off to the after-party, looking refreshed and in great spirits. What a consummate professional and a very nice person.

La Vie en Rose

I happened to get this movie through Netflix, not knowing anything about it; it popped up as “Other Films You Might Enjoy”. ENJOY? I loved this movie. Let me repeat: I LOVED THIS MOVIE!

I thought Marion Cotillard’s performance as Edith Piaf was absolutely amazing. I thought the movie was amazing; very well done. If you are an Edith Piaf fan, want to see great acting or want to see a great movie - see this movie.

Orson’s Shadow

I love going to the theater. I recently went to see ‘Orson’s Shadow’ at the Pasadena Playhouse. It’s about egos colliding in a drama where you are imagining that theater critic Kenneth Tynan is persuading Orson Welles to direct Laurence Olivier and his new love, Joan Plowright, in Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros.” Okay, it may not be for everybody, but I liked it.

Sharon Lawrence was absolutely fabulous as Vivien Leigh. You don’t hear much about Sharon Lawrence these days, but she has credits a mile long and is a wonderful actress.

I Love Lucy

Congratulations to my good friend, Suzanne LaRusch, for making it into the Top 5 on the ‘Next Best Thing’ show; Suzanne was brilliant and flawless - she was awesome!

Let’s hope that the producers (if they do this show again) have two separate shows - one for comedian impersonators and one for singing impersonators.

You can visit Suzanne’s website at
